Vorkosigan House Onesie

After all the work I put into my Vorkosigan house uniform, it seemed only proper that when I became a father I made a matching outfit for my son. It's made from a nice brown wool jersey fabric that we bought on our honeymoon, long before we thought about having kids.

The soutache cord was laid on in the same way as on my uniform, with a lot of pins and several passes of stitching. The maple leaf was laid out using the same stencil as on my uniform, so they're the same shape and size. The cord is a silvery-grey rather than the silver on my uniform, because I needed it to be washable.

After sewing the maple leaf by hand, the rest of the decoration was basted by hand but sewed on by machine, as it was straight lines and gentle curves. Besides, I was running out of time!

I also added a simple line to the outside of the sleeves, to emphasize the cuffs and mimic the line on my uniform.

Here is the final result (I haven't added the snaps yet). The neckline is not ideal, and it fits more snugly that I'd wanted (babies grow fast!)

Teo did get to meet Bujold, twice even, but sadly I was not wearing my Vorkosigan house uniform. (I did wear just the jacket at WesterCon, and someone took a picture of the two of us, but I don't have a copy.)
